life for Kabul's street children is a daily battle to earn enough money so their families can eat. They leave their meager homes or shelters early in the morning, hoping to sell some cheap items or beg enough to survive. Most have had at least one parent killed in the war, and many are refugees. Since it is so difficult for widows to earn an income, being fatherless puts an even heavier burden on children and may force them to take to the streets as the family’s breadwinner. Each day, street children may put themselves in dangerous situations, such as approaching cars hoping for a handout or to sell sticks of gum and phone cards. Some pass a burning can of noxious fumes in front of passersby, promising to “ward off the evil eye” in exchange for a few coins. They may beg, sell plastic bags, look for scrap metal, shine shoes or do whatever they can for a little change. Along the way, many are abused. They live in fear of being robbed of their paltry earnings, their freedom, and even their lives Copyright©: Sebastian Rich/UNICEF/All rights reserved.1436,962Not For Sale

Zeinab is a nine year old a refugee from Syria living with her brothers and sisters in an informal settlement in Mafraq Northern Jordan.
For Syrian refugees who are unable or unwilling to reside in formally established refugee camps and are unable to afford regular housing solutions within host communities, Informal Tented Settlements (ITS) have become the default option, notably for the most vulnerable and impoverished displaced Syrian households.
The informal nature of these settlements means that access to shelter, food, water, sanitation, health, education, and other essential services is not officially established and often intermittent. Falling outside the relief response currently targeting refugees staying in managed camps and within host communities, displaced Syrian households living in ITS face serious difficulties in accessing protection and assistance. Zeinab is profoundly deaf due to a virus she contracted when she was just a few months old. She is pictured here with her pet pigeon. ~ Copyright: Sebastian Rich/UNICEF/All rights reserved.

Afghan women and young girls often run away from home to escape forced or underage marriage, beatings, stabbings, burnings, rapes and even forced prostitution. 'Zina' (sex outside marriage) is also a crime under Afghan law, punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Some women and girls have been convicted of Zina after being raped or forced into prostitution.
