  • SYRIA

A young mother crosses the border from Syria into Jordan and becomes a refugee. In her arms she carries her one month old son Hamid. The number of refugees fleeing the conflict in Syria to neighbouring countries has now passed four million, confirming that crisis as the world's single largest refugee crisis for almost a quarter of a century under UNHCR's mandate. New arrivals in Turkey and updated data from the Turkish authorities on refugees already in that country have taken the total number of Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries to more than 4,013,000 people. Furthermore, at least an additional 7.6 million people are displaced inside Syria – many of them in difficult circumstances and in locations that are difficult to reach.Tragically, and with no end in sight to Syria's war, now in its fifth year, the crisis is intensifying and the number of refugees are rising. The four million milestone comes barely 10 months since the total of three million was reached. At current rates, UNHCR expects the figure to reach around 4.27 million by the end of 2015.

  • AFGHANISTAN ~ JALALABAD
This is Saifal seventy four years old and has been a refugee in Pakistan with his family since 1979 when the Russians first invaded Afghanistan. Because of the instability in Pakistan and the constant harassment by the Pakistani police he thought it safer to return after all these years to his home city of Jalalabad Afghanistan. Like a lot of refugees at that time the fighting was so intense he left with just the clothes on his back. On arrival back in Afghanistan on the 16th march 2015 he received a lump payment from UNHCR in the encashment programme but is now broke as he cant find a job and is renting a small house to house his family . His twenty year old son works as a day laborer when he can get the work as unemployment in the region is very high. " My most urgent need for my family are food items, I cant afford to feed my family properly at the moment , "I have no work" Saifai has a wife two sons and six daughters. The UNHCR Sub-Office in Jalalabad was established in 1992, to assist and protect Afghan IDPs and returnees. Since the beginning of the Voluntary Operation in 2002, over 1.1 million returnees were assisted to reintegrate back in their communities in the Provinces of Nangarhar, Kunar, Laghman and Nuristan.

This is Hayatuwha fifty two years old and a pure Afghan Koochi tribesman. He is photographed here with two of his children, Samina a girl one year old in the swinging crib and Salma two and a half years old in his lap. The Koochi were and some still are an Afghan nomadic tribe letting their flocks of goats and sheep graze all over Afghanistan. Hayatuwha was made a refugee in 1979 when the Russians invaded. As he and his family members fled to Pakistan two of his cousins were killed by bombs from Russian aircraft just a couple of miles from the Pakistani border. He says he is glad to be back in Afghanistan it is his home and this is were he will stay with his family now. When asked what he thought would happen if the Taliban would ever be the dominant force again in Afghanistan he says that he has no problem living with the Taliban " they are muslims like me". He also says that all foreign powers must leave Afghanistan and let Afghans sort out their own fate. He returned to Afghanistan in 2009. He and his family live in a UNHCR constructed shelter consisting of two large rooms and a courtyard. The shelter is in the village of Kochiabad just outsude Kabul. The cost to UNHCR is 2500 US dollars this represents seventy percent of the overall cost of the build the other 30 percent coming from UNHCR's partners. The Solutions Strategy for Afghan Refugees (SSAR) remains the main policy framework for sustainable reintegration of those returning to Afghanistan. Many returnees have migrated to towns and cities, contributing to the country's rapid urbanization. As rising poverty and unemployment in urban centres prevent them from reintegrating into society, many will need basic assistance.

Maria is forty-nine years old and fled from Jawzjan Province Afghanistan eighteen years ago because of heavy fighting. Rival Mujahedeen factions constantly fought for control over the village which made it impossible to live. It took four days in the back of an open flatbed truck to get to the safety of the UNHCR refugee village Turkman in Pakistan. They left so quickly because of the danger with just the clothes on their back, her husband could not carry anything because he was very sick with tuberculosis. Maria has unfortunately been widowed twice. Her first husband just fifty years old had an unknown illness. He fell sick in Afghanistan and passed away in four days of becoming ill. Her second husband died of a heart attack four years ago in Pakistan. Her children by her second husband, Abdulrehman aged nine and his sister Hanifi six years old sadly do not remember their father. Maria says that she does not want to go back to Afghanistan, as there is nothing to go back to now. Her son is at school now and I want him to have an education. I do miss my country and my parents who are still alive and live in Jawzjan. But I will stay here for the sake of my children it is safer. When asked if the tragedies in her life made her stronger, she says that yes they have, I am strong but I blame my father for my sadness and I am so angry with him, my marriages both of them were arranged for me. If my father had not arranged them I would not have had such sadness in my life, but now I am strong. I want to stay in Pakistan for my children. Maria makes a living by preparing wool for the carpets weavers. She also helps anyone in the community who needs her help. She says it is my duty to help others.

She was alone with her son and daughters when fierce fighting broke out in her village and they hid behind walls to try and be safe from the bombings and gunfire. It took fifteen days to get to The UNHCR Turkman refugee Village in Pakistan crossing the formidable mountain range ˜The Hindu Kushâ in mid winter. She says she nearly froze to death. One of her friends who was a little older than her did die on the march across the mountains from severe cold “ we buried her in the mountains” she says. Qurdan admits that she is an opium addict! She had an accident and used opium to kill the pain but is now addicted. She weaves carpets for a dealer in Peshawar to pay for her addiction and to make ends meet. Her Son Jura is working off a huge loan by working twelve hours a day six days a week in the boiling heat of a local brick factory. He took out the loan with the brick factories owner to pay for his sisters wedding. His weekly wage is the equivalent of just eighteen dollars. The loan will take him seven and a half years to pay back if he is lucky and get the continuity of work with the brick factory. Qurdan says that the main problem for her in the Village is that because her son is working so hard and such long hours at the brick factory that she has to do everything herself in the house, which is difficult for her. When asked what she wanted for the future she says I want to see my son married, and I want to see my grandchildren. Qurdans two daughters married and are back in Afghanistan. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country. In more than five decades, the agency has helped an estimated 50 million people restart their lives. Today, a staff of around 7,092 people in 124 countries continues to help 35.8 million persons.
