  • BOSNIA

Young Bosnian boy left alone in an orphanage during fierce shelling by Serbian forces Bosnia 1993.

Young boys in a lunatic Asylum during shelling. The staff fled when the asylum came under intense Serbian shelling. With every shell that hit the building, his sense of intense bewilderment and fear is heightened. The inmates were left to fend for themselves without food or clothing or any means of sanitation, for a week. The combination of teeth- juddering exploding shells, high-pitched screams and the stench of defecation, urination, and fear induced vomit from the inmates was one of the more upsetting situations that I have been in. If one is familiar with the Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch’s work and his interpretation of hell, you are not far off the mark.

The Beirut Barracks Bombings October 23, 1983 Lebanon occurred during the Lebanese Civil War when two truck bombs struck separate buildings housing United States and French military forces—members of the Multinational Force (MNF) in Lebanon—killing 299 American and French servicemen. An obscure group calling itself 'Islamic Jihad' claimed responsibility for the bombings.

Suicide bombers detonated each of the truck bombs. In the attack on the building serving as a barracks for the 1st Battalion 8th Marines .The death toll was 241 American servicemen: 220 Marines, 18 sailors, and three soldiers, making this incident the deadliest single-day death toll for the United States Marine Corps since World War II's Battle of Iwo Jima, the deadliest single-day death toll for the United States military since the first day of the Vietnam War's Tet Offensive, and the deadliest single attack on Americans overseas since World War II. Another 128 Americans were wounded in the blast. Thirteen later died of their injuries The explosives used were later estimated to be equivalent to as much as 9,525 kg (21,000 pounds) of TNT.

Sebastian Rich with Yasser Arafat. Arafat was chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization from 1969 until his death in 2004, a tumultuous period in which clashes with neighboring Israel were prevalent. Born in Cairo in 1929, Yasser Arafat was named chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization 40 years later. From this post, he was at the forefront of years of violence, border disputes and the Palestinian liberation movement, all centering on neighboring Israel. Arafat signed a self-governing pact with Israel in 1991, at the Madrid Conference, and together with Israeli leaders made several attempts at lasting peace soon after, notably through the Oslo Accords (1993) and the Camp David Summit of 2000. Stemming from the Oslo Accords, Arafat and Israel's Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres shared the Nobel Peace Prize, but the terms were never implemented. Arafat ceded his PLO chairman post in 2003, and died in Paris in 2004. In November 2013, Swiss researchers released a report containing evidence suggesting that his death was the result of poisoning.

The Cobra faction in South Sudan have handed over to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) a final group of 283 children in what the agency described as “a small piece of good news in what is otherwise a terrible situation for children in other parts of the country, where many boys and girls have been abducted and forcibly recruited as child soldiers. The release of 282 boys and one girl by the so-called 'Cobra Faction' took place in Labrab, a village in a remote corner of Jonglei state in South Sudan, bringing to 1,757 the number of children who have been released by the militant group this year. During the release ceremony, the children handed in their weapons and uniforms in exchange for civilian clothes. The boys and the one girl will stay at the interim care centre where they will receive food, shelter, medical and psychosocial support until their families are traced and they can return home.

  • UNHCR IRAN

A mother and her family, Afghan refugess) living in a settlement in Shiraz Southern Iran Despite the voluntary return of hundreds of thousands of Afghan and Iraqi refugees to their countries of origin during the past decade, the Islamic Republic of Iran remains host to one of the world's largest and most protracted refugee populations. Between January 2002 and June 2014, UNHCR assisted 918,263 Afghans in voluntarily returning home from the Islamic Republic of Iran. A total of 30,349 Iraqi refugees have been assisted to repatriate voluntarily since 2003. However, the number of people who have returned in 2013-2014 is lower than in previous years, so they require continued assistance. The global economic downturn, removal of subsidies, and intensified international sanctions have caused hyperinflation, affected the delivery of basic services, and resulted in a dramatic rise in living costs in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Some 24 per cent of registered refugees are considered vulnerable, a rate that is expected to increase due to the economic situation. Sanctions also continue to negatively impact UNHCR's ability to provide humanitarian assistance in an effective and timely manner.

  • South Sudan
The last day of this assignment with UNICEF in fact the last frame from my camera ended in capturing a lifeless tiny bundle of immense sadness. Little Rita in the the first summer years of her short life died while I photographed in the Juba Children's Hospital South Sudan. Rita died of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) not because of famine caused by a natural disaster but by mans ongoing bloody wars in this stricken country. Cutting off road infrastructure for essential food supplies were they are most desperately needed. The tiny most vulnerable ones suffer and die in their thousands. To the men with guns and no heart for your country the Rita's of South Sudan are your terrible legacy. Photography by Sebastian Rich for UNICEF
