  • SYRIA/IRAQ

In the UNHCR (United Nations) Syrian refugee camp 'Bakarah' just outside Erbil Kurdistan yesterday morning while photographing for Save The Children UK. This little Syrian girl appeared out of nowhere. She tugged my shirt sleeve and demanded with a beaming smile that I take her picture. I duly did of course, how could I not ! She posed with a serious and slightly impish stare and said "take take" in English. As soon as I pressed the shutter she said "thank you" in English again, beamed another broad smile and vanished back into the sprawling camp before I could get her name. I love this image , I dont know why maybe it says hope, or maybe its just a nice image of a normal little girl in all this terrible sad mess that is Syria.

  • Syria

Six-year-old Aya (Arabic for Miracle) was in the kitchen with her mother and younger sister helping prepare an evening meal for the family. Due to the war in Syria, her family could not afford a gas cylinder for cooking. The only source of fuel being old and highly volatile kerosene in jars. The kerosene jar exploded engulfing Aye. She suffered the most terrible and excruciatingly painful fourth degree burns on her face, stomach and hands. The family risked their lives and travelled to the Turkish border with Syria. Turkish doctors carried out five surgeries on Aya but said that they had tried their best but could do no more for the little girl.
The horrific burns made it difficult for Aya to see, eat and breath. Her face now brutally disfigured, making her an easy target for name calling and bullying from other children.
Returning to their village in Syria was not an option as the war had intensified, so instead the family fled too the UNHCR Domiz refugee Camp in Kurdistan Iraq. But even in Domiz camp, with improved safety, Aya continues to suffer isolation. Other children do not want to play with her and are scared of her appearance. Aya remains in her tent all the time, ashamed of her appearance, alone and sad. Doctors advise that if she does not receive surgery soon, she will become blind.

Twelve year old Masezeno sits patiently on her bed waiting for her grandmother to visit in the Bataro district hospital rural Rwanda. She is being treated for Chronic malnutrition and protein deficiency which has lead to permanent stunting. She is ten kilos under the proper body weight for her age and is six inches shorter than she should be. She is in constant pain due to swelling in her joints and cries out everytime she moves. Somehow she managed a sweet little smile while I photographed her. A staggering forty five percent of Rwandas children suffer from physical and mental underdevelopment due to malnutrition.
