  • INTRODUCTION

UNICEF reports that the 2015-2016 El Niño has ended but the devastating impact left behind on children is horrific, as hunger, malnutrition and disease continue to increase following the severe droughts and floods spawned by the event, one of the strongest ever on record. In Eastern and Southern Africa the worst hit regions some 26.5 million children are suffering, including more than one million who need extremely urgent treatment for severe acute malnutrition.

In the swirling dry and parched dust bowl that is Mytayamangta village Chikwawa District Malawi. I met  Makia just fifteen years old and already with four children of her own. Bluntly this little family have no food,

Makia’s husband the children’s father is nowhere to be seen and when asked about his whereabouts a look of apathy, mild disgust and total disinterest claims Makia’s gentle features.

Because of the terrible on-going drought they have been forced to eat the only thing they can get their hands on. This comes in the form of a tasteless root of a local water Lilly called (Nyika), the root is of absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever.

It is also incredibly dangerous to gather as the receding waters they collect the root from are crocodile infested. The family have been eating nothing but this root for four months now. The root itself is now becoming scarce as the whole village is turning to it as a sole food supply. Her four children have 'Severe acute malnutrition with little Konja 16months old being the hardest hit. I gently held Konjas hand in a vain attempt to comfort her as she whimpered softly in her mother’s arms, her skin was the texture of dried and cracked autumn leaves. Konja cannot walk because of the pain in her little joints and is wasting away at an alarming rate. The nearest clinic is too far to walk and the whole family are exhausted and weak with hunger to attempt the journey. Makia says " We just live day to day, what can we do”
